A Lovely and Unusual Read

I just finished A Gentleman from Moscow by Amor Towles, which our group will be discussing in a week. Having immersed myself last year in reading War and Peace one chapter a day (on a private FB group), this was a perfect book for me.

The events of this book begin 110 years after the beginning of of W&P, and involves the repercussions of the Russian Revolution for one specific aristocrat over the next 32 years.

A beautifully and carefully conceived work of art, AGRM contains many surprises and plot twists, engrossing ruminations on philosophy, politics, history, culture, and much more. The people are complex and elicit one's sympathy - even the Bishop, who never figures out how he causes his own misery.

The Metropol Hotel is a fantastic setting for this saga, and the way the hotel does and does not change over the years reflects Russia itself.

I can't wait to discuss this novel with our group!
