A Very Southern Weekend

When the group proposed reading COLD SASSY TREE by Olive Ann Burns, I recalled that this was suggested at least 5 if not more years ago, and that I was at the time vocally against reading it. So this time, for sheer perversity, I voted for it.

I'm from the South and I have an aversion to how "cutesy" books about the region can be, but I must admit this book manages to capture the comic aspects of small town Southern life plus portray some larger than life people without turning them into sentimental comic book characters.

It so happens that during breaks from reading the book, we watched "Sherman's March" by Ross McElwee, which was released in 1986 and somehow I missed it all these years, another dose of pure Southerness . . .
