For July, we discussed TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD - some of us were reading it for the first time, some of us have seen the movie, some were rereading - and we all love the language, the story, the hope the book represents. Ironically, our meeting was on the street date of the "new" book - so although none of us have read GO GET A WATCHMAN, we discussed the notion of the book.
Is the book a scam, a crass and heartless exploitation of Harper Lee being carried out in plain sight by a major publishing house and Lee's lawyer "friend" - sadly it has that feel. From reports, Harper Lee doesn't need the money that the book is already raking in. And what would publishing an inferior book at this late date possibly mean to her? Especially after years of resisting publication.
As I am writing, ironically the song MONEY CHANGES EVERYTHING is playing in the background. Let's hope that Harper Lee is the one profiting from this venture, financially as well as spiritually. We will be following this semi-mystery in the news.
