Inquiring minds have asked: how do you choose what books to read? We used to all bring books and go through a process of reading aloud the back of jacket copy, noting a few reviews and awards, discussing what our friends had said about the books (while contemplating the reliability of any of this). Sometimes choosing the new book took longer than discussing the previous book.
For the last year or so, here's our process. If you are the host, you bring a couple of suggestions for books to the next meeting AFTER you host (as hosting is enough work for one evening). Then we discuss a bit and vote.
Works pretty well . . . and we always know that if we are totally stymied, we can read John Adams (which Serena has suggested a couple of times a year for several years) or My Struggle (which Kate has been urging upon us since it was published). Actually it may be fear of ending up having to read these rather lengthy tomes that makes our system work.
