How could there be anything but love for THE LIBRARY BOOK by Susan Orlean???

Book club meets tonight, and if emails are any indication, the group is not quite as enchanted as Eileen and I were over Susan Orlean's new book about libraries. I personally found it to be a pageturner, which says as much about me, I suppose, as it does about the book.

I found the mystery about who set the Los Angeles library on fire quite intriguing, the colorful characters who have run the library over the years fascinating, and the history of the library and libraries in general fascinating. (Note that I have enthusiastically re-embraced the Oxford comma after reading about a few court cases settled merely because the lack of that extra bit of punctuation.)

Of course I am a complete nerd, but Susan Orlean is a genius of immersive writing. If you missed The Orchid Thief, her earlier book, go get it. In the meantime, I am looking forward to sparring with the group over the merits of The Library Book, which I plan to reread immediately.

NOTE after the meeting: I don't think E and I convinced them how wonderful the book is, but they were very impressed that Eileen had emailed Susan Orlean and gotten an immediate and very thoughtful reply. I still love the book, but will have to wait to reread; I loaned it out to Robin.
