H is for Hawk

I am going to wait until after our book club meeting to actually write about this book. But it strikes me that the last five books we read are about people dealing with a lot of trauma/grief. (One fictional, the others autobiographical). Since on some level, we are all going through a type of trauma, the various approaches to dealing with this were very interesting to me. Getting involved with a hawk would not be my cup of tea.

Okay, it's several weeks later. MacDonald writes as one would hope since she is an accomplished poet - beautifully. I happen to really like stories of people with an obsessive interest, as I am a bit more of a gadfly. I could never be a falconer training a hawk: much too time-consuming for one thing. But so fascinating.

And interesting to read about how she used her obsession to deal with her grief; that was enlightening. But perhaps the most interesting thing, which I found out by watching talks she has given online, is that after her book was published, she had to revise her self image. She considered herself a profound introvert, but having her book be successful propelled her into a book tour, and meeting (especially women) all over the world, and she discovered she really enjoys this and has made new, different friends.
