We couldn't wait to talk about the Lady in Waiting . . .

I have to say, this book brought up a lot of issues for our group . . . Some characterized Anne Glenconner as a Doormat, some as an unaware snob. Her lifestyle repulsed several of us. She did get points for her loving care of her sons in their time of crisis, but a lot of criticism for never "evolving," never realizing that she could have an impact on the crazy class structure of Great Britain. Let's face it, she's not exactly a feminist, or a social justice warrior.

Actually, I think she has had an impact, merely by writing her book. She raises the curtain on that life in a very real way. She points out how her own life rocketed back between glittering days with the royals, to despairing days with her bipolar husband.

I think I had lower expectations for Glenconner than our group did.  I enjoyed her feisty, if somewhat disorganized, account of her life.

It is perhaps no surprise that our next book, THE CHOICE, is about someone who took the circumstances of her life (surviving Auschwitz) and has made a large impact on many people.
